#1: In-N-Out Burger

When California-based burger chain In-N-Out held a pop-up event in Singapore at Gillman Barracks’ Timbre in 2014, all the burgers were sold out within five minutes. Yes, you read that right. Five minutes. Since then, they’ve held another pop-up at Columbus Coffee Co. on Upper Thomson Road. And guess what? As expected, they sold out again. The first person in line started queueing as early as 6.30am in the morning, four and a half hours before the event began.

You may be thinking, so is it really worth losing sleep just to try their burgers? The answer is yes. In-N-Out specialises in the freshest ingredients used in every single one of their food items, and you will definitely be able to tell from your first bite. It may look like your average fries and a cheeseburger, but it’s not. The fries are hand-cut from fresh potatoes every day and the burgers are made with local meat.

Must-try: Double-Double – two beef patties and two slices of cheese with a whole onion slice stacked between them

Location: USA (Southwest and Pacific Coast)

#2: Shake Shack

By now, we all know that there’s a Shake Shack in Jewel Changi Airport due to the overwhelming number of people who go there every single day since it opened. The New York City-based fast food chain opened its first ever restaurant in Singapore this April. And just like with In-N-Out, there are people who are willing to queue hours for it. Luckily for us, this time the restaurant here in Singapore is permanent.

What makes Shake Shack so special? Their burgers, of course. From the juicy and tender beef to the perfectly baked buns, every bite is one to savour. But at the same time, their shakes, hot dogs and fries are totally worth going crazy over too.

Must-try: ShackBurger – Single or Double Cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce™

Location: USA, UK, Mexico, various countries in Asia, Jewel Changi Airport (Singapore)

#3: Five Guys

It seems that 2019 is about to become one of the best years in Singapore’s fast food industry. After Shake Shack’s resounding success, another classic American fast food restaurant is about to open its doors here. Starting sometime from October to December 2019, we will finally get to try Five Guys for ourselves! To prepare you for this exciting event, here’s what separates Five Guys from other fast food chains.

If you’re the kind of person who likes the feeling of being able to customise your order, then you’ll be delighted to know that Five Guys is famous for precisely that. There are a whopping 15 different toppings you can choose from for your burger. Mayo, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mustard, Relish, Onions, Jalapeño Peppers, Green Peppers, Bar-B-Que Sauce, Hot Sauce and A1 Sauce. Can’t decide? Then just get them all!

Must-try: “All the way” toppings combination – mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, and mustard

Location: USA, Canada, various countries in Europe and Asia, Coming Soon: Singapore

#4: Chick-Fil-A

So, maybe you’re not the biggest fan of burgers. Well, Chick-Fil-A specialises in something entirely different – chicken sandwiches! Business Insider named Chick-Fil-A as their Chain of the Year in 2018. It’s also often referred to as one of America’s favourite fast food chains, with its easy to eat boneless chicken sandwiches.

As usual, these sandwiches are made with fresh and simple ingredients with no added fillers or hormones. Their tasty chicken is seasoned to perfection, hand-breaded, pressure cooked in 100% refined peanut oil and served on a toasted, buttered bun with dill pickle chips. Also try their famous Chick-Fil-A sauce, which is actually a brilliant combination of many other sauces!

Must-try: Waffle Fries – Waffle-shaped potatoes with the skin cooked in canola oil until crispy outside and tender inside

Location: USA and Canada

#5: A&W

A&W moved out of Singapore 16 years ago and fast food here has never been the same since then. But Jewel came to the rescue again this year by bringing back one of our childhood favourite fast food chains. But wait – there’s more. Do you remember where the original A&W restaurant was located more than a decade ago? It was at Ang Mo Kio, which is also coincidentally the location of Singapore’s second A&W outlet, opening this July!

There is no doubt that A&W is most famous for its root beer and root beer floats. These are made with a special recipe of a blend of herbs, spices, barks and berries. But you can buy these off the shelves of any supermarket here in Singapore, though the authentic one is definitely still worth a try. So what else can you taste at A&W? We recommend the cream cheese burgers and double cheeseburgers, or waffles with ice cream and sundaes for dessert.

Must-try: Coney Dog – all-beef hot dog served with your choice of toppings

Location: USA, various countries in Southeast Asia, Jewel Changi Airport (Singapore), Coming Soon: AMK Hub (Singapore)

#6: Olive Garden

Okay, I will admit that Olive Garden isn’t exactly fast food. But it’s still considered casual dining and certainly has some of the finest food you’ll find anywhere in the world. Their unique Italian-American blend makes for a wonderful combination of flavour in their salads, chicken and seafood. They also serve practically every single kind of pasta you can think of.

But Olive Garden is undeniably most famous for their breadsticks. When you first look at it, it literally looks like any other piece of bread. But once you begin to eat it, it’s nearly impossible to stop. Their secret? First, fresh pre-rolled dough is delivered to their restaurants every single morning. From this, a fresh batch of breadsticks is cooked every 15 minutes, ensuring that you’ll always get them served warm and tasty. Last but not least, the breadsticks are lightly brushed with melted butter and sprinkled with garlic salt after baking, which makes them simply irresistible.

Must-try: Tour of Italy – chicken parmigiana, lasagna, and fettuccine Alfredo

Location: USA, Canada, Brazil, El Salvador, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico and UAE

#7: Buffalo Wild Wings

As you can tell from the name of the chain, Buffalo Wild Wings is famous for its buffalo wings. However, something else that sets them apart from other fast food chains is their unique restaurants. Sports lovers will find themselves surrounded by over 50 televisions and media screens showing all of your favourite sports the moment you step in. The grey shorts and jerseys (with the number 82 representing 1982, the year the chain was established) worn by the waiters will make you wonder if you’re in a restaurant or a stadium.

Now back to the food. Even the most delicious wings can never be complete without the right sauce – but don’t worry! Buffalo Wild Wings has got you covered. With 16 different sauces and 5 different seasonings for you to choose from, there’s something for everyone’s taste buds. Other than wings, you can also try their burgers, sandwiches and wraps.

Must-try: Honey BBQ Sauce

Location: USA, Canada, Mexico, Panama and various countries in Asia

#8: Panera Bread

Another one that can’t really be considered fast food, but is casual enough to be on this list. Panera Bread is a mix between a bakery and casual dining. The best part is, it’s all made with zero artificial preservatives, sweeteners, and colours! It’s a good thing you won’t have to feel guilty about having too much food from here because you’ll certainly want to try everything after looking through their menu.

From soups to bread to sandwiches, you’ll be awed at the wide range of food Panera Bread has to offer. Consider trying their oatmeal, which can come with almonds, quinoa and honey, or blueberries, granola and cinnamon crunch topping. Think it’s impossible to find food that’s both healthy and delicious at the same time? Then you’ve got to try Panera Bread!

Must-try: Steak and Arugula Sandwich – thinly-sliced seared steak, ripe tomatoes, pickled onions, and a herbed cream cheese spread

Location: USA and Canada

#9: Wendy’s

Most of you might still remember Wendy’s before it closed down islandwide about four years ago. To jog your memory, one of the more well-known restaurants was located along Orchard Road, opposite Shaw Theatres Lido, and another one at Jurong East MRT Station. Sure, many may have forgotten about this iconic fast food chain as time went on, but in case you feel like reminiscing, or travelling to a country with Wendy’s soon, here are some of our old favourites.

Instead of traditional circular burgers, Wendy’s burgers come in squares. Other than burgers, their sea salt fries are also very much worth a try. If you’re looking to cool down on a hot summer day, Frosty is here for you! It’s a form of soft-serve ice cream mixed with frozen starches that is surely one of the most iconic items on the Wendy’s menu.

Must-try: Dave’s Double Burger – a half-pound of fresh, never frozen beef, American cheese, crisp lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mayo, and onion on a toasted bun

Location: Worldwide

#10: Dairy Queen

Although this is a list of “fast food”, Dairy Queen’s slogan would disagree with me. “Fan food, not fast food” hopes to rebrand Dairy Queen’s food as happy memories and sweet indulgences. However, everything else remains the same – your order is taken fast, made fast, and you’ll surely want to finish it fast. Unfortunately for us, some years ago, Dairy Queen had to close down operations in Singapore due to rising costs. But luckily, you can still find it in many countries nearby.

As you may know, their most famous item, the Blizzard, is served to you upside down and you get another one for free if it falls out. If you love ice cream, you have to try flipping your Dairy Queen soft serve at least once in your lifetime! But maybe you’re somewhere cold and don’t fancy a cup of ice cream. Fear not – Dairy Queen serves even more delicious food! You can try their range of hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and French fries.

Must-try: Banana Split Blizzard – strawberries, pineapple, chocolaty topping and banana blended with creamy vanilla soft serve

Location: Worldwide
