On 5 Mar 2018, a 52-year-old man was sentenced to 24 months in jail after assaulted and raped his then 11-year-old neighbour on several occasions.
The man was a close family friend of the girl’s family, she also calls him “papa”.
The man raped her several times, in the carparks and at the staircases.
The abuse lasted four months before it was revealed to her school councilor.
When he realized the crime was found out, he left his wife and fled to Malaysia, where he was remarried to another woman.
He remained there for five years before his arrest.
The accused used the child’s gullibility, created a false profile names Charles to stay in contact with the girl.
“He manipulated the victim … (to) get close to her, obtain her trust and ensure continued access to her,” the prosecutor added.
The girl would ask what he was doing and he will reply that it was “not a crime”, whenever he raped her.
The crimes were repeated on every Saturday for several weeks, as he takes her to tuition so it will not seem suspicious.
The man then came up with an “arrangement” with her for secret communication. He would ring her house phone before hanging up, then she would call him back on his phone.
The accused was caught 5 years later, when his wife ran into him at a temple in Johor Bahru.
She confronted him and lodged a police report, he was arrested the next day and extradited to Singapore in September after serving a prison sentence in Malaysia for immigration offenses.
The prosecutor urged the court for a harsher sentence of at least 21 years in jail, he was then sentenced to 24 years.
“On the one hand, the accused says he deeply regrets the offences and wants to apologise to the victim and her family. Yet in the same breath he states that it was the victim’s mother’s responsibility to have monitored her daughter”, said the prosecutor.
“He only deeply regrets … getting caught. His revolting assertions make it clear that he lacks remorse.”
The man pleaded guilty on Monday, 5 Mar 2018, to four of nine charges, including three for aggravated rape and one for aggravated sexual assault.
For sexually assaulting and raping the victim, who was under 14 at the time, the man could have been sentenced to eight to 20 years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane per charge.
As he is above 50, he cannot be caned.
