On July 7 this year, shoppers will not be charged any GST at shops and restaurants participating in the Great Singapore Sale, which has since been rebranded as “GSS: Experience Singapore”.
Instead, the 7% tax will be absorbed by the shops themselves, including the following
- Orchard Road Business Association
- Restaurant Association of Singapore
- Singapore Furniture Industries Council
- Textile and Fashion Federation
- Precinct Association One Kampong Gelam.
These associations make up a large number of eateries, clothing stores, furniture manufacturers, electronics stores, beauty and wellness businesses, supermarkets and department stores in Singapore. The idea of having a “Shopping Day” on 7/7 came about as retailers wanted to spice things up to meet the demands of today’s experienced shopper.
The GSS: Experience Singapore will take place for a total of 6 weeks, from June 21 to July 28.
Besides the zero-GST day on 7/7, shoppers can look forward to extra discounts off items on every Friday.
Other events include a pop-up market on Orchard Road, local film screenings and concerts at the Design Orchard building, a furniture expo showcasing limited-edition designs at Robinsons The Heeren, and a fashion show on the Orchard Road scramble crossing on June 21.
What will you be looking out for this coming Shopper’s Day?
