KT McFarland was nominated as the new ambassador to Singapore by Trump, but requested for the withdrawal of the nomination due to the Russian investigation.
President Donald Trump nominated KT McFarland as ambassador to Singapore at last May, but the US Senate did not act on the nomination by the end of 2017. White house then resubmitted her nomination in early January this year.
New York Times reported back in December that they had obtained an email McFarland sent on Dec 29, 2016 regarding the meeting between Michael FLynn and former Russian-US Envoy Sergey Kislyak, the day former President Barack Obama’s Administration authorized new sanctions against Russia.
McFarland then said in a written response that she was “not aware” of the talks between Trump’s formal National Security Adviser Flynn, and Kislyak.
Later on, Flynn pleaded guilty for lying about his contacts with Russia, and agreed to cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to delve into the actions of Trump’s associates before he took office.
Last Friday, McFarland said in a letter to Trump, “I am asking that you withdraw my nomination to be the US Ambassador to Singapore.”
“I have come to this decision reluctantly, because I believe in your mission,” seen from a copy of the letter by Reuters.
Trump then mention in a statement, “KT served my administration with distinction. Unfortunately, some Democrats chose to play politics rather than move forward with a qualified nominee for a critically important post.”
McFarland then wrote that Trump had “laid the foundations for a new foreign policy that puts America’s interests ahead of, but not at the expense of, our obligations to others.”
“Know that I have no intention of withdrawing from the national debate and I want to help you in whatever way I can.”
