Taking violence to the next level, an intoxicated 40-year-old security guard brutally attacked his son, leaving the 15-year-old secondary school student with lacerations to his upper back and arm.
The incident was sparked by an argument which broke out between the man- who cannot be named as his son is a juvenile- and his wife when he returned home at about 11pm after he had been out for some drinks.
As the temperature and tension between them rose, he turned physically violent, beating his wife with his fists before picking up a knife. Their son woke up to the ruckus and saw his father confronting his mother wielding a knife in his clenched fist.
Then, as his instincts to protect his mother kicked in, he approached his father, in an effort to disarm him. However, the situation only got worse.
The infuriated security guard swung the knife towards the teen, stabbing and slashing him on his arm and back.
The woman intervened, in an attempt to separate her husband from her son and to snatch the knife away. However, in the scuffle, the man gave her a shove, forceful enough to make her fall backwards to the floor.
After some time, the man ceased his rampage and the police were alerted. They arrested him upon their arrival at the bloodstained scene.
While the woman sustained injuries to her hand, head and neck, the teenager suffered wounds that are likely to leave him with permanent scarring, according to Deputy Public Prosecutor Joanne Leong.
The man was sentenced to jail for a total of 12 months on May 9, under a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to his wife, and a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to his son by dangerous weapon.
For voluntarily causing hurt, he could have been jailed up to two years, fined up to $5,000, or both. For voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon, he could have been sentenced to seven years’ jail, a fine, caning, or a combination of the three.
