Bangkok city is famous for two kinds of shopping experiences – cheap or luxurious. Step outside the city confines and you’ll encounter a whole new shopping experience on a visit to the floating markets. One of the country’s biggest attractions, Thailand floating markets are famous for their fresh local produce, Thai delicacies, handmade pottery and handicrafts… Here we list down the TOP 5 THINGS you MUST try when visiting Bangkok’s Floating Markets!
1. SCRUMPTIOUSLY FRESH AND AFFORDABLE SEAFOOD
At the floating market, you can expect to see vendors selling seafood in restaurants along the canal. Feast on sweet fresh river prawns, grilled fish or squid on the river bank. Generally most floating markets sell fresh produce, but for a great start you can give Amphawa Floating Market a go.

2. THAI BOAT NOODLES
Thai Boat Noodles, as its name suggests, originated from small canoes navigating Bangkok’s and Ayutthaya’s canals in search of customers. Therefore a trip to the floating market is incomplete without enjoying a bowl (or two) of Thai Boat Noodles. Until today, they are still mostly served piping hot in traditional small bowls. Two recommended places for tasty Thai Boat Noodles are Damnoen Saduak Floating Market (more tourists) or Bang Phli (more locals).

3. COCONUT RICE PANCAKES (KHANOM KHROK)
Khanom Khrok is a popular sweet Thai dessert which consists of two layers – the base is made from a rice flour and coconut milk mix, and the topping is a sweet mix of coconut milk and sugar, plus whatever other toppings you want to use! Khanom Khrok can be easily found in any floating market. Traditional Thai Desserts at the floating market cost 35-50 Baht.

4. SALT-CRUSTED GRILLED FISH (PLA PAO)
If you’re down for a more exotic delicacy, give this dish a try.
5. GAC FRUIT
If you happen to pass by a fruit juice station, get a healthy gac fruit drink (usually mixed with passion fruit to create a reddish looking refreshment known as Nam Fak Khao). It is high in antioxidants and a great drink to quench your thirst after roaming around the floating market.
