A Full-time National Serviceman was charged on Wednesday (24 Jan) for causing “grievous hurt” to a 26-year old former Republic Polytechnic student outside a Yishun flat, which resulted in his death.
The victim, Shawn Ignatius Rodrigues, 26 at the time, suffered traumatic asphyxia with a head injury as a result, which led to his death.
Another man, Lawrence Lim Peck Beng, 56, is being charged with aiding the crime by pinning the victim down by sitting on his buttocks and holding his legs, while the NSF was assaulting him.
Mainstream news reports have stated that “a dispute escalated into a fight”.
However, a police report from 2016 reveals some additional information:
From the report, the NSF’s mother had previously lodged 4 police reports against Rodrigues, 3 for harassment when Rodrigues turned up at their house suddenly and was uncompliant when asked to leave, and 1 for alleged molestation.
A Hardwarezone Forum post also showed other residents of the Yishun flat with the same concerns:
The incidents were supposedly “under investigation by the police” when Rodrigues appeared at the Yishun flat again. This time, the NSF likely decided to take matters into his own hands, which resulted in Rodrigues’ death.
The maximum punishment for causing grievous hurt is 10 years’ jail, a fine or caning.
