Samsung has announced today (26 Feb) that its new Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones will be available in Singapore on 16 March.
Samsung unveiled the phones to the public on Sunday (25 Feb) at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The 64GB variant of the Galaxy S9+ retails at S$1,348, while the 256GB variant retails at S$1,498.
The Galaxy S9, which only comes in 64GB, will retail at $1,198.
The S9 external features are remarkably similar to the S8, with the same full screen and curved glass edge.
They are available with the colours Lilac Purple, Coral Blue, Titanium Gray and Midnight Black:
There are also some pretty cool upgrades:
Dual aperture camera
A major difference between the models is that the S9+ comes with a dual aperture lens camera, providing a variable aperture between f/1.5 to f/2.4, and a high resolution of 12MP.
This camera is Samsung’s most advanced yet on a mobile device – the dual aperture serves to control the amount of light into the lens, allowing users to take well-lit photos in both very bright and very dark conditions (the “Super Low Light function”), without any additional settings.
Both phones also come with a front camera with a resolution of 8MP.
Both the Galaxy S9 and S9+ cameras will allow for super slo-mo video taking at 960 frames per second.
If you’re unfamiliar with slow-motion camera speeds, most movies/films/YouTube videos are played at 24fps.
This means the camera can take videos and play it back up to 40 times slower in high definition.
In response to Apple’s Animoji feature, the new phones also let users create customizable selfie-to-emoji GIFs.
Samsung has claimed the AR Emoji can map out over 100 facial features of the user, creating a true-to-life 3D model of the user, like an avatar, that can mimic even micro expressions such as slight winks and nods.
Apart from those listed here, there are several other improved features, such as louder sound and a faster processor. Also, (unlike Apple), Samsung will be keeping its earphone jacks.
You can find the full specifications on Samsung’s website.
Pre-orders for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ begin on Thursday (1 March) at noon, at telcos M1, StarHub, Singtel, or Samsung’s online stores.
Alternatively, those interested can also head to online retail sites of major electronics retailers such as Best Denki, Courts, Gain City or Harvey Norman.
