Singaporeans love any festivals and events that scream “hippy” or “unique”, especially in a rather festival-deprived country. With the same team that brought you Artbox Singapore in 2018 comes the Taiwan-inspired Shilin Night Market that was jam-packed over the past weekend.

Fresh and reminiscent of it’s Taiwan origin, signatures like ChiaTe Bakery Hot Star Chicken makes the visit worthwhile. But despite the love for Taiwan Night Markets, the long lines have got many goers leaving bad reviews for this event.

THE GOOD

Devil Chicken and MilkBro

A Taiwanese favourite that arguably wins over Hot Star is the Devil Chicken Steak. Perfecting the ratio between crunchy exterior and super juicy chicken thigh, the Devil’s Chicken is as sinful as it sounds! Other popular stores from Taiwan like MilkBro serving Brown Sugar Milk Tea and ChiaTe Bakery with their famous Pineapple Tarts brings you right back to Taiwan.

Other notable mentions also include Chiak Liang, Chun Cui He, Kazo Cream Puff and Jim Beam!

THE BAD

The Queues that Kills

Singaporeans love to queue even if we don’t know what it is for. But here, you don’t see a market and instead just sweaty people queuing everywhere. There’s an average waiting time of 30-90 minutes just to order your food, and even more, before you get it. Good things are worth the queue, but we’re not so sure about it this time. Especially when almost everything here is not actually from the real Shilin Night Market in Taiwan.
