Since when does Rendang Chicken have to be CRISPY?

1 min read

In a recent episode of a popular TV programme, Masterchef(UK), the judges of the show has triggered waves of criticism from its audience when they commented on a contestant’s chicken rendang for not being “crispy”.

This remark has made headlines on social media, especially in the South East Asia region, where the people are questioning the credibility of the judges. Malaysian contestant, Zaleha Kadir Opin presented the judges her nasi lemak dish, serve with chicken rendang and prawn sambal, but was ultimately eliminated from the show after the judges ruled that “the chicken skin isn’t crispy, it can’t be eaten, and all the sauce is on the skin so I can’t eat it.”

When it comes to food, the people in Singapore, Malaysia and some say Batam, may be considered just slightly below the level of Masterchef judges. Riding the waves of criticism towards the judges on the show, Malaysia’s Prime Minister took his own comments to twitter, saying that “Who eats “crispy” chicken rendang?”.

Of course, KFC Malaysia would not miss this opportunity to do what it does best- roasting. They posted on their social media accounts a photo of their bucket of chicken that says “not rendang” and captioned “the only thing that should be crispy is our fried chicken.” Talk about striking while the rendang is hot!

However, Zaleha posted a photo on her instagram account, captioning that despite the outcome, she stands by her traditional way of preparing her nasi lemak and that she is thankful for the experience on the show. Her display of fortitude is surely something that many of us can learn from.
