With the ongoing pandemic, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed by a year although the exact date has yet to be confirmed.
Japan said that delaying the games would put its $12bn investment at risk. Furthermore, the organisers will have to find a way to maintain things for another year to ensure everything is up to date.
According to Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the organising committee, the total cost of the delay and who will bear it has yet to be confirmed.
Are all countries still participating?
Nope, Canada and Australia have decided to pull out of Tokyo Olympics.
- Australia reasoned saying that the health of their players is their top priority
- With the rapid spread of COVID-19, Australian authorities can “no longer guarantee the safety of (their) players to continue to play”
- In addition, with tighter border controls implemented by the Australian government, the players being unable to return home is a cause for concern too
However, Australia’s decision (0530, 23 March 2020) was announced before the suspension of the Olympics was announced(11 00,23 March 2020).
So maybe Australia may still participate in the Tokyo Olympics? Who knows!!
