Who’s That Pokemon??!

Who’s That Pokemon??!

Have you seen or played Pokemon before? If so, I’m sure you have  come across some that bear semblance to this very animal. Both wooper and mudkip are interpretations of axolotl ( pronounced a-sho-lod in Aztec) which originates from Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City.

They are also known as the Mexican salamander or Mexican walking fish. They are amphibians and are part of the salamander family.
The reason why they remain adorable is that they experience neotany, which means they reach sexual maturity without undergoing metamorphosis, remaining in their larval stage throughout.
Their primary method of feeding is through suction and their diet consists of worms, insects, and small fish.
Their regenerative abilities makes them valuable for scientific research and ensures their captive survival as they are critically endangered to the point of extinction in the wild :((
Unfortunately, they are banned in Singapore and purchase is illegal.
Here is a cute video of Ripley the axolotl : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj0iq-bWnsg
